58 Screw You People Who Thinks That Being A Teacher Sucks!

>> Wednesday, January 13, 2010

I never said enough, but I'm PROUD to be a future English teacher.

A teacher's job isn't at all easy and relaxing with less working hours and lots of holidays. I simply hate it when people assume that.

IT IS ACTUALLY NOT! We are dealing with children/teenagers who are fragile and still searching for their rightful place in the world. Dealing with one is already a big load of burden on our shoulders, imagine dealing with a whole class of different individuals. You have no idea...

One wrong move might destroy a child's future or even your own.

One right move and you'll be thankful you're not confronted or sued by the parents.

I know it seems as though we have lots of holidays. But our so called holidays isn't guaranteed. We still can be called out of the blue for courses, office work and extra school activities (which is quite often). There goes our family time and plans for the summer. Even going back after work, we are still bound to more work such as marking assignments, doing research and finishing up reports.

So you don't go around assuming that we are so frikking free.

Just the other day when I went to a function with my mom. A few of her friends asked what am I studying? When my mom said 'teaching ', they actually tried to comfort me by saying 'Ok what... at least got long holidays'. This is the same reply for about 3-4 people who find out I was going to be a teacher.

Ok what...

Ok what...

Ok what...

F*CK YOU, OLD FARTS!

I didn't say it wasn't OK. You simply assumed that it sux. I don't care if you're a successful businessman or a famous doctor. Just keep your judgmental stereotyping thoughts to yourself.

I guess this kind of ideas comes with being typical Chinese too. For a typical Chinese mindset, If you're a doctor or engineer, you're doing very well. If you're a businessman or accountant, it's common. If you're a teacher, you're a below average student who can't even make it to business.

Screw it. I'm extremely proud of my course and I'm extremely proud to be the only Chinese guy in my cohort.

credits to Mr.Labu for the pic

Here's something to change your stereotyping minds on the teaching line, especially my course.

First of all, it's a degree which many still assumes it's a diploma (I'm not saying there's anything wrong with diploma, but this is just to satisfy those narrow-minded dimwits)

Secondly, my course is a total of 5 and a half years (1 1/2 years foundation and 4 years degree). So those aunties and uncles, stop making hideous faces to say "Waahhhh why so long wan....teaching only what..."

Thirdly, my course is a scholarship by the government which I have to apply and go through interview and tests to qualify. So sorry to say but it is NOT easy to get in but somehow I made it. I am thus, fully sponsored by this scholarship. This includes complete free courses, free accommodation plus monthly allowances banked in to our accounts.

NO hidden charges. If there are any, it will be reimbursed back by scholarship division. My parents don't have to lift a finger or worry about my expenditure in Penang. They just have to worry when I come back to Melaka coz that's when I will spend money like water.

F.Y.I, my scholarship is worth approximately half a million. Yes.. 500k PER person (58 people) in my course - TESOL - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

It's that much because we are the first batch of the TESL program to twin with a foreign university. Mine, with Macquarie University in Sydney Australia (7th top university in Australia). My course mates and I are already official students of Macquarie, and we will be leaving to Australia on this coming February 10th. (Huhu left one month here T.T)

Our scholarship even covers the course fees there plus a list of different allowances for us to survive there for 2 years. Even before going over, we are getting allowances such as clothing allowance (RM1200) to shop for our winter wear and other stuffs. After the 2 years in Australia, we still need to complete our final year (practicum) before we are posted to schools as teachers. For all of this, we are bound to a 5 or 7 years contract (around there).

That's basically why I'm very appreciative to be in my course. My father must has rubbed off some of his principals to me, which is never to take things for granted and always aim for excellence. That's why it's a must for me to maintain at least distinctions and a minimum of 3.5 GPA at all costs. It's for personal achievement rather than for reward or punishment.

If you think the exams are easy, think again. Our assignment carries more weight than the actual final exam. However, our Australian counterpart will come down to Malaysia to discuss and vet our exam papers. There are known cases of people failing and re-failing. They have to get booted out of the course and of coz their scholarship is revoked. Additionally, they have to pay a hefty sum for the money invested in them by the government. This can amount to 100k, depends.. Thankfully and hopefully, none of these happen to my course mates.

Here's another reason why I'm proud to be a teacher. I like the look on other's faces when I tell them I'm studying to be a teacher. They simply can't believe it and laugh it out. Even one time when I was stopped by a police for not putting the P sticker, the police found out I was going to be a teacher and laughed.

I don't understand why...

Ok actually I do. I don't portray a typical image of a teacher. That's what I'm actually proud of. It's not that I want to rebel the system where teachers must have a certain kind of appearance. But I just think that the system is not effective anymore in this new generation.

My mom got this friend who comes to our house occasionally to play mahjong. She's a teacher in St.David's High School. She saw me with my earrings one day and gave me the cynical look.

"You in the teacher's college can wear that ar?", she asked.

Walao... You're a teacher, play mahjong can la? Don't bite on your own tongue leh...

Ok I didn't actually reply that. I just ignored her.

I'm just being myself without succumbing to society.

However, the best that I can do is to tone down ... since I'm going to the pre-departure briefing by the Ministry of Education this Wednesday. It's an important briefing attended by government student teachers going overseas.

This is my so called "teacher image".

I regretted getting a haircut.

After all said and done, this post is really meant to stop society's stereotypical views on teachers. Here's my stand..

1. Being a teacher is not EASY.

2. Studying to be one is not either.

3. The teaching line is not LAME. It's frikking prestigious. Even more prestigious than doctors! (don't take it personally ya doctors, just a reference).

4. You don't need to be society's nerd to be a teacher.

If you want to bombard me with the contrary, be my guest. I will be responsible to entertain questions or comments regarding any of the matter mentioned above.

Final note: Screw you people who thinks that being a teacher sucks.

Donna January 13, 2010 at 6:45 PM

first, i am jealous... i am very jealous.. be a teacher is great (especially with all the benefits when u working with Gov.. =.="), and u tot easy to apply be a teacher now ar? just look at the KPLI statistics, success rate is less than 10% only. everyone is fighting to be a teacher ok.

second, teachers still have MORE holidays than normal workers outside.. that is still a fact.. =.=", so dont scold ppl la.. u want to compare? I only have 11 public holiday a year, and 14 annual leave per year, saturday is compulsary OT day, working 10-12 hours per day. i am very jealous ok..

third, yea.. talking about the stress, not everyone can be a good teacher, not every student going to listen to u, every student has their own pattern, good luck in tackling them.. haha.. while workers outside just have to deal with their boss, or sometimes customer.. XD

forth, i am jealous

fifth, i am jealous

sixth, i am still jealous.. hahaha.

Donna January 13, 2010 at 6:47 PM

Jacque January 16, 2010 at 2:34 PM

Yeahh!!! =) I absolutely AGREE with u! Being teachers are NOT easy nor sucks. I'm proud to have chosen this route in becoming a future English teacher too!

Without a teacher, there won't be any successful businessmen, doctors, lawyers, engineers, or whatsoever great professions in the society.

The reason is... They need good teachers for educating the young ones first. XD haha.

Keep up the good work! All the best, cool future English teacher! ^^

woaini_87 January 16, 2010 at 6:52 PM

i think being teacher is fun..
i actually had that in mind, but eventually went for the other...

I think the only hard part is to understand all the children so that your teaching in class can be fun and not stressful..

Wish you all the best..
and kids are CUTE..

Att Ashburn January 16, 2010 at 11:20 PM

like ur friend, sya said..when we said, study kat maktab..org ckp, maktab jer.. try saying VUW or Macquarie.. ternganga tak..
seriuosly i hate this kind of ppl.. konon2 we are teachers, so tak standard la..kalau org cakap teaching pun belajar sampai 5 setengah tahun, i just answered, "yelah, macam nak jadi doktor"..

kalau teacher dulu yelah, tak ramai nak apply. tapi nowadays, nak jadi cikgu bukan senang. our spm result pun not that bad kan..

haiyoo, ntah ape2 la..ignore these people.diorg jelos coz we are much better than them, got the scholarship, study overseas..
btw, i saw u in pjaya the other day, but segan ooo nak tegur hehe..

chris_lim January 18, 2010 at 1:08 AM

toradengdang: Blame their narrow mindset.

woaini: Ya, that's a challenge and I hope to do d best.

att: What u say is true, now the requirement to bcome a teacher is vry hard. Lucky us. Haiya... u should come say hi ma. I wont bite.

Kate January 18, 2010 at 1:44 AM

I've seen teachers in Japan looking exactly like you during my student transfer days. high school teachers who are much awesome and a new breed of their own. good for not succumbing to typical chinese culture.

Good luck to ya! Be a cool and great teacher. :)

[SK] January 18, 2010 at 9:30 AM

levian January 18, 2010 at 10:19 AM

well, who cares what others say, they are not you. you are living your life the way you wanted it. just ignore those who think so highly of themselves. judging people? please, they are not god. just be who you are, n proud of it. :)

HappySurfer January 18, 2010 at 11:47 AM

Firstly, thank you for stopping by, and secondly, I think you'll make a great English teacher - a new breed of tech-savvy, forward-looking and cool teachers! You go, dude!

Btw, seriously are earrings allowed on male-teachers? I'm not sure about tattoos though. My word of advice is just to do the right thing and if in doubt, don't. Just my two sen.

Chris, this is indeed an insightful post. Thanks for sharing.

You know what? Reading your post reminds me of movies like Pay It Forward, Dead Poet's Society, etc.

Best wishes and have a wonderful experience in Australia. Looking forward to reading about it.

Psst... new haircut is nice and neat. I like..

suituapui January 18, 2010 at 2:23 PM

I was a teacher for 30 years. No regrets whatsoever... They respect you more in the small towns...and even in the bigger ones like where I was teaching before I retired, once you've shown what you're capable of, they will respect you for who and what you are.

Sad that really good teachers are few and far between these days - many are in for the money or they can't find a job! These are the ones that have given the noble profession a bad name.

Hang on in there!!! With your attitude and dedication, you'll make a good one, I'm sure.

Joshu@law January 18, 2010 at 5:40 PM

Fuiyoh~ A teacher with earring! Not bad! I like that! ;D

Chris Sng January 18, 2010 at 8:04 PM

Heyy! Nice blog you've got there! :)

Kevin Cheng January 18, 2010 at 11:35 PM

Thanks for sharing your information of a teacher. I met a teacher friend 2 weeks ago and he told me he needs to go back to work even during holidays. so holidays is not really holidays for them and teaching is only part of the work, there are a lot more tasks to do, like researching and so on.

foongpc January 19, 2010 at 1:24 AM

Hi Chris! Long time didn't drop by here already!

Don't care what others say! Be proud that you are a teacher cos believe me, teachers are the greatest influence in the world today.

Teachers can change the world because teachers create quality students and in turn the students become quality adults. Teachers create leaders, businessmen, engineers, lawyers, doctors etc.etc.

Not everyone can be a teacher because it's one of the most stressful and toughest jobs in the world.

And of course teachers get a lot of holidays - they deserve it! : )

chris_lim January 19, 2010 at 7:27 AM

molly January 20, 2010 at 6:42 AM

I have lot to talk here after reading you post but dare not because my english is so terrible at this old age.
At least now I learn how to be careful before I speak to the younger generation because I am also like those aunties, sometimes nothing to say also will simply squeeze out something to irritate people.
So you will be spending you new year away from home, take care & thinks for dropping by my blog!

Thx guys 4 all d comments and encouragements. Really made me feel better that people still look up to this profession. Thx again.

Zable-Fahr January 23, 2010 at 4:37 PM

Hey there nice post. I was watching a movie last night called "lean on me" starring morgan freeman as a badass principal. I dunno if you watched it yet, but i recommend you that movie.

I'm gonna be the bad guy here and give some criticism lol... The thing is, what you said is true, about being a teacher is a hard road. But, all you said is that it's hard and beneficial to be studying to be a teacher. You can't judge something you like to do by how hard or easy or how beneficial it is. If you say you're proud of it, then tell us how are you proud of it. By just saying that you're proud, and without elaborating, it comes to my mind that you're proud because you went through this tough course and finally passing it. That is something to be proud of i agree, but if so, you are not proud to be a teacher, you are just proud that you can do it.

Aight, i'm done i guess. I like this post coz it shows alot of passion, and doing something that we all are passionate about regardless of other ppl's thoughts. Correct me if i'm wrong in any parts of my comments, as i speed read through your post, coz i'm rushing to go out ^^. Peace.

chris_lim January 23, 2010 at 5:25 PM

zable fahr: Thx 4 ur insights, really appreciate it. There are a couple of reasons why I didnt elaborate further.

First, it's because I need at least a 2500 word essay to express how proud I am and I dun wan to bore my readers. Secondly, I only focus on the part I went through because Im not yet a teacher and I still hvent pass my course. Hopefully, this will justify the limited elaboration. Maybe next time when Im already a good teacher, I will write the second part to this post.

Thx and peace bro :)

Zable-Fahr January 23, 2010 at 7:30 PM

Haha, no probs man, take care and good luck!

Manju January 24, 2010 at 2:01 AM

the long holidays are actually one of the perks of the jobs, and honestly many people in other professions envy those long holidays. ignore the ignorant ppl and do your own thing. teachers are awesome, my parent are teachers haha ;)

Joey January 31, 2010 at 5:28 PM

i bet u willbecome the hot topic in the school :D

KC January 31, 2010 at 8:52 PM

kudoz man.

well yeah it's true that being in the government service we tend to get a wee bit more cutis than our fellow private sector sweatshop coolies (i get 30days a year woopee) but then again take into consideration the (generally) longer working hours and higher service provider-to-client ratio and the big picture ain't all that rosy as it seems.....

anyway big thumbs up for standing up for what you believe in...kids nowadays (especially mainstream chinese ed kids) really need all the English language guidance they can get - hailing fr 10 yrs of SRJKa nd SMJK(C) education i for one can testify that d English language standard amongst Chinese ed students is at an epic fail level :(

keep up d good work k.

IyouweBlog.com May 9, 2010 at 5:08 PM

suport u!!!! we need this type of teachers! i believe that u will success in ur life!

could u share wif me ur experience of applying this scholarship? which unit offers this scholarship?

Reiko May 19, 2010 at 5:35 PM

It's inspiring to see how passionate you are towards the path you chose. Recently I've been thinking about my future and considered being a teacher too. You're right; being a teacher is not easy at all and they play a VERY important role in a child/teenager's development. It's good that there are still dedicated teachers-to-be like you. Good luck with your future endeavors! I am sure you'll make a cool teacher.

Erica Toh June 26, 2010 at 11:22 PM

Wow, I couldn't agree more with you, Chris! Gambateh! XD
